I am dismayed to see so few women and virtually no representatives from a black and minority ethnic background among the top 50. Is there a twinge of guilt somewhere?

I trained as an architect in the 1970s and got used to being in a minority at most meetings and on site, so in some ways having only a few women at the top was understandable - simply too small a sample to pick from. But the NHS is full of women at all the other levels.

I do not believe there is any possible excuse for this bias.
