Do you work for one of the best health employers in the country?

This week HSJ, our sister magazine Nursing Times and NHS Employers unveil the Healthcare 100 - a ranking of the best employers. It was measured primarily by returns from a vast staff survey, along with analysis of employment practices.

The results, revealed in a supplement with this week's magazine, highlight many inspiring examples of staff who are deeply engaged with their organisation - sharing their values, having their skills recognised and developed, taking pride in their work and having a voice in the organisation's future.

Win-win

As NHS Employers stresses, engaged staff work harder, perform better and stay longer. Patients are the big winners.

Feedback from staff in the best organisations is stunning. One employee at Queen Victoria Hospital foundation trust said: "I cannot believe how supportive, friendly and approachable everyone is." At the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre "directors are approachable and listen to staff at all levels". Patrick Geoghegan, who leads South Essex Partnership foundation trust, "is one of the people, not a chief executive above everyone else".

As the financial climate for the health service gets tougher, it will be the organisations with cultures like this that will meet the challenges with the most confidence.
