PERFORMANCE: Young people have been placed on adult wards 18 times since March 2012, the board of Lancashire Care Foundation Trust was told.

But the trust has responded with improvements in the process for admission to one of its units and also more information about the availability of beds for children and adolescents across the north of England.

A nationwide shortage of intensive beds over the last few months has led to cases where young people have been looked after in the trust’s The Platform unit, when they required a more intensive environment.

“These situations required significantly increased staffing levels to maintain a safe therapeutic environment and resulted in increased use of restraint and property damage,” a report to the board said.
