STRUCTURE: A new hospital unit will open at the Market Harborough District Hospital in Leicestershire in 2014 it has been announced.

The East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group intends work to start on the site in 2013.

Dr Dave Briggs, chair of the CCG, said: “Since the funding was announced earlier in the year a lot of work has been going on in the background to prepare the planning application which we aim to submit late summer. We have appointed architects and are talking to builders and planners about what we want to see on the site.

“We are aware there are other issues around the new hospital unit that people want answers on – including transport and accessibility for local residents – and we are looking at these as part of the planning process. When we have more concrete information we will make sure residents of the district are informed.”

The new development will see improved services for patients and significant benefits to local healthcare, with the provision of a variety of services on one site in the town.
