Stafford Borough Council has called for criminal action to be considered against the former leadership of Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust over an alleged death rates cover-up.

Councillors agreed to instruct the council’s chief executive to make a formal complaint to the Crown Prosecution Service against the trust’s former chief Martin Yeates and former chair Toni Brisby.

The complaint will concern claims that the pair misled the council’s health scrutiny panel.

In a statement, a Stafford council spokesman said the council wanted the CPS to consider whether the duo “committed the offence of misconduct in public office by knowingly giving false and misleading evidence to the council’s statutory overview and scrutiny committee”.
