Stephen Dorrell has been appointed chair of the NHS Confederation, it has been announced.
Former Conservative MP Mr Dorrell was health secretary from 1995 to 1997 in John Major’s government, and served as the chair of the Commons health committee from 2010 to 2014.
He stepped down as an MP ahead of the general election earlier this year, after 36 years in Parliament.
He has remained an influential commentator on health and social care, an in recent years has been a prominent champion of integration of health and care.
Mr Dorrell takes over from Michael O’Higgins, who joined the Confed in 2012.
NHS Confederation chief executive Rob Webster said Mr Dorrell’s “skills and experience in working across the political spectrum will help to further strengthen our role as the only organisation bringing together and speaking on behalf of the whole health and care system”.
Mr Dorrell works as a consultant to private equity businesses, and is a senior adviser to KPMG, supporting the firm’s global health and public sector practices.
