COMMERCIAL: Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group plans to continue funding pilot physical activity programmes after a review showed there were a range of patient benefits - including better sleep, higher energy levels and improved pain management.

The Physical Activity Care Pathway programme involves activities such as Tai Chi, Pilates, gym sessions and walking groups.

The CCG will fund the programmes for a further year, and wants to competitively tender the service for another year after that during the second half of 2015-16.

The scheme will cost the CCG about £200,000 over the two years.

Lead service development manager James Barker said: “There is strong evidence to demonstrate the importance and potential of using health professionals to promote physical activity.”
