PERFORMANCE: The South of England strategic health authority cluster is reporting “dramatic improvement” in the number of patients receiving specialist stroke care in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire.

A press release also said stroke patients were benefiting from “discharge support teams” providing rehabilitation services in patients’ homes.

Eighty-seven per cent of patients in the South Central SHA area were spending at least 90 per cent of their hospital stay in a specialist stroke unit, up from 56 per cent last year.

Recent service reconfigurations now mean six hyper acute stroke units are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In addition, a specialist stroke unit at the Isle of Wight is set to introduce thrombolysis treatment “in the next few months”.
