STRUCTURE: North Bristol Trust’s Southmead hospital is likely to be the centre of a new vascular network across Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.

Subject to consultation services will be reconfigured by May 2014 in line with NHS England’s service specification. This will require all arterial surgery in the area to be provided at the centre and will mean a loss of activity for University Hospitals Bristol Foundation Trust and Royal United Hospital Bath.

Management and commissioners of Weston Area Health Trust will also get sign off if there are major financial implications for the trust.

A report to North Bristol’s May board said a “high level assessment” of capacity at the trust’s new private finance initiative hospital had identified space for a 32-bedded dedicated vascular ward and an additional 12 vascular surgery lists.
