WORKFORCE:  Only five of 22 wards at Northampton General Hospital Trust have sufficient numbers of nurses, an investigation into staffing levels has found.

Deputy director of nursing Fiona Barnes highlighted the figures in a report for a Trust board meeting.

The trust reviewed its nurse staffing levels using the Safer Nursing Care tool developed by NHS Improving Quality.

Ms Barnes said: “The findings suggest that based on the 2014-15 budget the nursing staff is under established by 46.7 whole time equivalents, and yet the unregistered workforce is suggested to be over established by 38.7 whole time equivalents, giving an overall under-establishment of eight.”
