For political and economic reasons the lockdown restrictions will be lifted, in part at least, by the summer. This period of lockdown has bought some time to allow planning. Whether this relaxation leads to a new spike will depend on which theory on the virus turns out to be true (Imperial or Oxford). Without widespread testing we don't know, hence the need to (sort of) plan for the worst case.
