Our problem isnt ITU beds - its staff. The Nightingales would be great if there were staff (and to be honest if there are staff can we have them here please?).
In the last wave physical capacity and equipment were the limiting steps as the hospital was largely empty of non-covid patients. Now we are more than 150% higher in covid and the rest of the hospital is managing a normal winter load. Staff are as susceptible to illness as the population so as infections rise staffing falls. We have already cancelled leave. and offered inducements for staff to work more. The only option we have is to use the well rehearsed critical care network (which to be fair runs really well.)
