Lift is not universally admired by those of us engaged in primary health care premises development ; its reputation is for slowness, complexity and the ability to absorb too much of the scarce resource available into its own process; this applies particularly to the small and medium-sized project. Two-part combinations with housing are more often the better way forward.
We do need more focus within NHS for positive development and more independent means of support for practices wishing to develop. We need more stability of local NHS staffing to allow long-term local 'street' knowledge to grow. Large Cohort retirements of GPs , planned population expansions, localised prevalence of poor standards need special responses in some areas. PW
