WORKFORCE: Royal Surrey County Hospital Foundation Trust is seeking to make around 30 staff redundant as part of efforts to reduce its workforce.
The trust issued a statement last month to “reassure patients” regarding proposed redundancies.
It has begun a consultation to reduce staff numbers, following a “detailed risk assessment to ensure that the high standards of patient care, safety and excellent clinical outcomes…are maintained”.
Trust chief executive Nick Moberly said there “no other option but to make changes to ensure it remains viable in the next year and beyond”.
“Our staff are our biggest asset, but also our biggest cost, and we must explore how best to reduce our costs while continuing to provide quality safe healthcare,” he said.
The proposals are to reduce staff numbers by around 100 posts from April onwards. Most of the cuts will be achieved by not filling vacancies and releasing agency and bank staff, the statement from Mr Moberly said. However, a small number of redundancies – about 30 – are “anticipated” from the trust’s workforce of around 3,100.
“The relatively small number of staff reductions is against a backdrop of a comparably much larger increase in staff numbers across the trust since 2009,” he said.
A trust spokeswoman said changes to frontline staff would be “minimal”. No doctors will be made redundant, but 10 nursing positions could be lost, with the possibility of up to three redundancies in specialist roles “if redeployment is not an option”, she said.
“All these changes have been rigorously risk assessed to ensure an ongoing high level of patient safety and care,” she added.
