PERFORMANCE: High levels of activity at Royal United Hospital Bath has seen the trust forced to keep open about 50 extra beds at the beginning of the year.

The trust aims to have a bed base of between 535 and 551 but has been significantly up above this dueint the last year, reaching 601 in January. Occupancy rates have been at 97 per cent or above for the last year against a target of 93 per cent.

A report to February’s board said declaration of black escalation for the whole chealth community in early January had provided some “respite” to operational pressures but concerns emerged about staffing and capacity in the community.
