STRUCTURE: NHS Somerset has delegated responsibility for medicines management to the area’s emerging clinical commissioning group.

A report to the primary care trust’s board reveals Wyvern Health took responsibility in 2009-10 for GP indicative prescribing budgets and engaged in some of the GP practice specific and wider medicines management issues.

The report stated: “They established a prescribing and medicines management committee that has continued to meet during the transitional period and has over the last year worked increasingly closely, and now merged with, the PCT medicines management committee”.

Under the new arrangement Wyvern, which covers 76 practices, will be responsible for delivering the prescribing quality, innovation, productivity and prevention (QIPP) savings and co-ordinating medicines management across the health community.

They would be not be delegated the formal statutory accountability for controlled drugs. However, they would host the accountable officer role which would continue to report to a NHS Somerset director to meet the legal requirements and would not be delegated responsibility relating to the community pharmacy contract.
