PERFORMANCE: NHS Southampton has significantly exceeded its year to date limit for C difficile infections, and went over the full-year limit for MRSA just seven months into the year.

At October 2012 the primary care trust had 44 C difficile infections against a plan of 30.

The PCT had five MRSA infections over the year to date, against a plan of four for the whole of 2012-13.

PCT cluster board papers said: “The majority of cases are attributed to the community, and University Hospitals Southampton Foundation Trust are within their year to date limits for both C diff and MRSA.”

The cluster infections lead, quality managers, CCG lead pharmacist and commissioning support unit information team had agreed an “initial action plan”, including developing a process for post infection review in the community.

An overarching infection prevention and control policy for primary care was also agreed.
