STRUCTURE: The primary care trust plans a phased closure close of adult day centre services for mental health and learning disabilities patients.

A report on the plan says the PCT, GPs and South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare Foundation Trust have agreed provisionally to a “disinvestment programme for mental health services”.

The report says the reconfiguration is designed to support the shift towards providing more mild-to -moderate mental health services in primary care and in community settings; and to stimulate services in the voluntary sector and reduce investment in traditional buildings-based services.

The aim of the plan is stated as to “improve mental health and learning disability services providing modern services for vulnerable adults which promote their dignity and independence”.

As a result, it says the Spring Meadow, Chartley Centre, St Davids, Friary Centre, Nuffield Unit (already shut) and George Bryan Centre will close on by 1 May 2011.

The Burton Task Group will remain open until the 31 December while a social enterprise model is investigated. The Albert House closes on the 1 August 2011, assuming a new third sector service has been commissioned, which will be developed with South East Staffordshire Consortium.
