STRUCTURE: A small fire broke out at the Haywood Hospital in Burslem on 10 March, NHS Stoke on Trent has said.

The primary care trust said fire-crews were at the hospital site in the afternoon and into the evening after the fire spread into the roof space. The outpatients department was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

A press statement said: “The fire is believed to have started accidentally and no-one was hurt. Staff acted quickly to raise the alarm and evacuated the immediate area to ensure the safety of staff and patients.”

Hospitals manager Jacqueline Williams added: “I would like to commend the staff for their swift actions in dealing with this fire. They did a fantastic job ensuring the safety of patients and maintaining services.

“The area was quickly cordoned off and business as usual carried on for the rest of the hospital site. The outpatient staff continued to deliver the services in another area of the hospital.”
