The NHS is overpaying millions of pounds in expenses and mileage claims, a software company claims.
Software Europe says its work with trusts and primary care trusts has shown 80 per cent of journeys are over-claimed. The average distance added to each leg of a journey is 2.5 miles.
The company’s Expenses2009 product identifies where there is “insufficient information” to support mileage and expenses claims, encouraging employers to challenge them.
Based on figures from its work with NHS employers, Software Europe estimates the potential overspend nationally to be more than £80m.
The company’s managing director Neil Everatt said: “Millions of pounds are being wasted on overclaiming on mileage.”
