PERFORMANCE: A review has concluded safeguarding services in West Sussex are inadequate.

Chief executive John Wilderspin told the board a joint Ofsted/Care Quality Commission inspection of safeguarding and looked after children’s services in West Sussex had been published in December.

He said: “Their conclusion was that the overall effectiveness of safeguarding services is inadequate.”

Mr Wilderspin noted that West Sussex County Council was “determined to improve on this position and has acted quickly in response to these findings”.

The council has established a Children’s Services Improvement Board, with an independent chair, to oversee the required improvements.

It has been agreed that Julia Dutchman-Bailey, the PCT’s director of quality and performance/chief nurse, would be the NHS representative on the improvement board.
