PERFORMANCE: Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust has “continued to experience particularly high levels of activity in care for older people”, according to board papers.

According to minutes from the trust’s board meeting on 31 January, the number of emergency attendances and admissions in the 65 to 85 year age group was higher than in the same period in 2011-12.

“For December, the overall number of emergency admissions had reduced by 2% but had increased by 13% in the 85 and over age group,” the board papers state. “For January to date, emergency admissions in this group had increased by 17% by comparison to the previous year.

“As the board was aware, patients in this age group normally presented with multiple and complex care needs,” they add.
