PERFORMANCE: Weston Area Health Trust has opened an additional ward to cope with increasing demand over the winter months.

The move follows a failure to meet the four hour accident and emergency target in October and November. A report to January’s board said this was despite attendances being 9.6 per cent below plan as the proportion of patients needing admission has increased.

The 20 bed Rowan ward reopened on 17 December for four months.

Minutes from December’s meeting said the financial cost of high activity levels was a “major pressure” for the trust.
