I was close to apoplexy when I heard about Liberal Democrat deputy leader Vince Cable's suggestion that directors reapply for their own posts and take a pay and conditions cut in the process.

It was particularly annoying against the backdrop of corporate greed and ineptitude in our financial markets, propagated by people on far higher salaries and managing a far less complex environment than NHS managers.

However, I calmed down a little after reading Managers in Partnership chief executive Jon Restell's response in the same news story. He recommended education and engagement of politicians as the best way forward to prevent such idiotic and irresponsible statements in the future. I hope many will take note - and action.
