    When a national sample of psychiatrists taking early retirement were asked what might have kept them in the NHS large numbers apparently replied, a change of government. Alarmed by the rising number of vacant consultant posts, a pre-election survey by the Royal College of Psychiatrists found members increasingly unhappy about organisational issues such as bureaucracy, paperwork and management interference.1

    Symbolism is always important. How disappointing, then, that party managers from both sides of the Commons are said to have rejected proposals to modernise the debating chamber.
