The 24-bed ward has been opened as part of a wider action to plan to improve its target of getting patients to an operating theatre within 36 hours, which the trust was consistently failing.

The trust requested £400,000 from commissioners for additional staff and equipment but this was refused on the grounds that through the tariff system the trust would receive additional income when it met best practice performance.
