Monitor didn't like to mention it, but he feels a growing sense of unease every time he chances upon Nige Edwards, the Confed's very own motormouth. Perfectly normal, you might say. But at HSJ 's Health Management Awards last week, it took a fresh pair of eyes (perhaps under the influence of a healthy portion of champers) to spell out the exact nature of the problem.

Monitor doesn't like to brag. While sweaty, pock-marked NHS managers grapple with high finance and clinical governance issues, it hardly seems fair to boast of glitzy invitations - temptations which come with penning a society column of this sort. But when an invitation landed in Monitor's 'party invite' intray from computer boffins WCI, the pulse couldn't help but race. WCI, for some reason, is too shy to admit exactly what it is, other than that it 'delivers people-centric web solutions'. ...

Just occasionally, and really not too often at all, Monitor has a whim. . . a passing fancy, if you like, to read a publication about something other than health management. Usually the moment passes before any harm is done. But at other times, and in particular in weaker moments, there is the Daily Mail. And the Mail has been on top form lately, exposing 'The Monster Devouring Britain'. And what is the monster? Well, lesbian caseworkers in Islington. But That is not all.

Well hello readers - especially James Barbour, NHS Lothian chief exec, beautifully photographed amidst the Scottish crags just two weeks ago in HSJ. One correspondent, who preferred to remain anonymous, recalled that in the early 1970s 'before attaining the heights of hospital secretary at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children' the young Barbour supplemented his income by modelling 'striped winceyette pyjamas for mail order catalogues'. Monitor hears that the saucy pics of 'Bedtime ...

Bristol is not a city with happy connotations for the NHS. But Monitor feels duty bound to alert you to the joyous celebration that is Gut Week 2001, running from 10-16 September. Our ship-shape city plays its part with the truly fascinating Bristol Scale, Gut Week literature reveals. The useful scale allows easy categorisation of stools - not the three-legged sort - into seven types. The detail is rather unsavoury, but the NHS's pursuit of excellence dictates that Monitor should give ...

Language is an ever-evolving phenomenon, as Monitor is well aware. Back in the good old days, regional chairs used to 'rock around the clock' and 'jive on daddio' at the IHSM disco.

One of Monitor's readers (hello there! ) has written in to draw attention to some truly wonderful goal-setting by your friends and Monitor's at the Department of Stealth. Now they are sorting out equal opportunities so that everybody - even ladies and people from outside Surrey - can get a job in the NHS. So let's look at those targets to be met by December 2004. Well, in futuristic times the DoH wants to see 50 per cent of those appointed to boards to be lady- shaped! That is half ...

Regular readers will recall that Monitor was upbraided last week for remarks about Marie Stopes' Passport to Sexual Health for Teens, and its usefully wipe-clean cover. Since then he has had the opportunity to reflect in a secluded spot on whether he has an unusual predilection for Benny Hill-style sexual innuendo.

Is that a swingometer in Monitor's pocket or is he just pleased to see you? The excitement of last Thursday's election led to all sorts of surges at Monitor Towers - and the kind of swings seen that night didn't need sophisticated technology to detect them! Oh yes, it may have seemed that things could only get better in 1997, but now Monitor is feeling significantly lifted. Still, That is nothing compared to the boost being experienced by the merry bunch of civil servants, chatterboxing ...
