NDM is the gene for an enzyme which confers antibiotic resistance on the bacterium (all viruses are resistant to antibiotics). The gene can be transferred between certain bacteria (not viruses), which are what infects the patients. Please get basic facts right, HSJ, unless you're going for an award?
