You are not going to get innovation from this type of provider. If you are a provider who gets the choice to select the highest profit areas - then why wouldn't you. There is no incentive to loss lead or innovate. Fawcett knows full well that NHS patients don't choose care and capitalises on this by suggesting that he can instead choose patients.

Trouble is if he won't loss lead or take bigger risks, then the remaining NHS providers will have to bear the cost of non-profitable parts - pushing total health spend up more.

I am now convinced that this is absolutely doomed.
