The money announced in the Budget for the health service is warmly welcomed and indeed long overdue - but some worries will remain, such as the assurance that the money will stay intact after the general election.

Equally important is an assurance that health partners such as social services will be given a proper level of funding after the comprehensive spending review in July, to deal with the serious and real problems of people stuck in hospital beds who ought to be at home or in other community placements.

Health secretary Alan Milburn and deputy prime minister John Prescott should act on those worries soon, and free hospital beds for what they are intended - dealing with the very sick.
