Brian Clayton, chair, Cumbria Ambulance Service trust

In your article dealing with chief executive salaries, there are inaccuracies in the figures for Cumbria Ambulance Service trust (Working Lives, page 32, 17 March).

Under the heading 'Bottom 10 English trusts' our chief executive, Tim Lynch, is shown as having a salary of£47,500. When Mr Lynch joined us in September 2004, he did so on a salary of£64,000. His present salary is£69,000. Mr Lynch's predecessor was paid in excess of£62,000 and we are therefore at a loss to understand the figures you quote in the article. We believe the error occurred because we had a period where we employed acting chief executives, and assume that some calculation leading to a figure of£47,500 has been computed from their salaries.

This is a great pity because we have no complaint with the general tenor of your article.
