The aim of the standing advisory group is to ensure that consumer involvement in the NHS R&D programme improves the way research is prioritised, commissioned and disseminated.

It believes that:

consumer involvement will result in research that is more relevant and reliable, and more likely to be used;

consumer values and views are central to the concept of health and quality of life, to the relevance of outcome measures and to decisions about healthcare;

consumers often know best about their own individual health;

as stakeholders in the NHS, consumers have a right to be involved in decisions about healthcare;

there should be mutual respect between consumers and professionals for their contribution to health and healthcare;

decision makers and professionals involved in the NHS should seek to ensure that consumers are treated fairly and in accordance with their individual needs.
