A new system of alert letters making all NHS organisations aware of health professionals whose performance or conduct could pose a risk to patients or staff is to be introduced from January.Alert letters are designed to cover situations in which an individual may have moved from the present NHS employer to work elsewhere in health or social care before their regulatory body has had a chance to consider suspension or other measures.The letters are not intended to be used in cases where the individual's performance or conduct is being considered by their NHS employer.A health service circular (HSC 2002/011) sets out the alert letter systems NHS employers should have in place by 1 January.
