I read the special report on law (21 June) with interest, given the remit of this authority. Your article 'Behind the hype: the truth about NHS negligence statistics' was anything but that.

Danny Lee's assertion that clinical negligence claims against NHS hospitals in England had risen by£700m in one year and account for 10 per cent of the NHS budget is misleading. In fact, the recent National Audit Office report reveals that the NHS spent£386m in the last financial year on clinical negligence claims.

I appreciate you must seek a wide range of views on litigation matters that affect the health service, but it might have been appropriate for you to consult this authority, whose main function is to handle claims on behalf of the NHS.
