With reference to your front cover (26 November), the UK minus Scotland and Wales does not leave England with the union flag, but with a St George's cross.

The fact that you automatically - or sub-consciously - act as if England and Britain are synonymous is part of a much wider underlying attitude among the English, which is likely to contribute towards a tendency to go for full independence in those constituents of the UK you clearly think of as parts of England. And who could blame them?
