I read with interest the remarks about hospital cleaning (news, page 6, 4 January). I have been a patient here for some weeks now, and not once has any cleaning work been checked by a supervisor.

I did consultancy work in the NHS in the 1980s, and in other public services, and found the same problem.

Curing it not only greatly improved quality but also productivity, which lowered costs or allowed more extensive work to be carried out. I have worked on similar hotel operations with the same results.
