Up to 3,000 people who received blood transfusions may be at risk of the human form of mad cow disease. They all received blood from 110 donors who were identified after three recipients of their blood died of variant CJD. Last week, the Department of Health began contacting the donors to warn them they are at a higher risk of carrying the disease than the rest of the population.

Officials are deciding whether to contact the 3,000 recipients.
