Mental health campaigners are calling on the government to take action against the rising numbers of patients being subjected to enforced treatment.The Mental Health Alliance has drawn up a charter, Care Before Compulsion, to influence future reforms of the Mental Health Act. In 1995,10 per cent of admissions to psychiatric hospitals were compulsory.The alliance is calling for a legal right to assessment, care and treatment to cut down on the number of patients being turned away when first asking for help.
