NHS boards have until 31 May to publish a local race equality scheme, when new duties under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act come into force. Since April 2001, all public bodies have had a positive duty to eliminate racial discrimination, promote equal opportunities and promote good relations between people of different races. Now the new schemes must show how NHS organisations, including trusts, primary care trusts and strategic health authorities, intend to meet these obligations within three years.
