young patient Elliott Barker leads a fleet of mini-cars down the corridors ofSt James Hospital in Leeds under the supervision of nurse Susan Matthews.

The cars have been providedby a toy manufacturer so that children can drive themselves around the building.

They can also drive themselves to theatre, as an alternative to being taken for operations on a trolley.

The schemewas originally piloted in a London hospital and has since been extended across the country.

The project makes going into hospital less daunting and also helps with the children's rehabilitation because they are keen to get out of bed and start playingwith the cars again.
