New appraisal guidelines and forms are now available from the Appointments Commission. The changes follow the commission's recent strategic review, which recommended the introduction of a more flexible appraisal system, supported by new guidelines and appraisal forms.

Under the new system, the commission will allow more local autonomy, while ensuring minimum standards are met. Guidelines and examples of appropriate appraisal forms have been developed in consultation with the stakeholder working group on appraisal, which was formed as part of the strategic review. They can be used by trusts and strategic health authorities.

The commission is also developing good practice guidelines on 360-degree appraisal for non-executives, which will be published in early 2009.
