The use of the term 'poof ' in the article on health services in Hampshire (On Location, pages 14-15, 23 September) was completely unjustified, even in the context of the article.

Such homophobic language merely reinforces stereotypes and I am disappointed that the usually high journalistic standards of HSJ were compromised in the story.

Gay men face discrimination in virtually every aspect of life and the fact that senior health service managers consider it acceptable to use such derogatory terms proves that the NHS still has a lot to learn about homophobia.
