Kevin Curran, the newly elected boss of the giant GMB trade union, which represents tens of thousands of NHS cleaners and ancillary workers, has told HSJ he will campaign for an end to the private finance initiative and oppose the creation of foundation trusts.
In his first major interview since his election as general secretary, Mr Curran said he would be lobbying and campaigning to oppose foundation hospitals.
'Foundation hospitals will lead to a two-tier health service with wealthy hospitals benefiting at the expense of others. It is as simple as that.'
And he wants the government to 'draw a line' under PFI. 'Where there are schemes ongoing it would be a waste of taxpayers' money to end them, but we do not want to see any more signed. We understand how the NHS has gone for PFI because managers have been offered no choice. We want the best for all hospitals and if that means more cash from the Treasury, so be it.'
