NHS prescription charges are in desperate need of review, according to a Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain report. Based on research carried out by King's Fund senior fellow Anthony Harrison, it says the current system is illogical, out of date and penalises poorer patients.
King's Fund chief executive Niall Dickson said a review was long overdue. 'It would have to look at the list of exempt medical conditions, which has not been updated since its inception in 1968. There is no justification for sufferers of some longterm conditions... not to be exempt.
'Often people cannot afford the medicines they need and this can lead to problems further down the line.' -www. rpsgb. org/policy
