The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has called for 'a radical curtailment of methadone-related deaths' as a priority in cutting the number of drugs-related deaths.

Its report Reducing Drugs-Related Deaths estimates that between 1,076 and 2,997 deaths were drugs-related in 1998. It says the 'sense of energy . . . which earlier characterised the response to HIV needs to be captured in a new and broader initiative on prevention of injection-transmitted diseases'.
