You refer to an experienced human resources manager failing a competency test (news, page 2, 9 December). Being in the same boat, but fortunately continuing to work in a worthwhile trust, I know that being branded incompetent does a bundle for morale.

The Scottish NHS Management Executive ran a rigid template of selected competencies against us all to find a smaller number of managers to take on a fresh set of challenges. Some fitted this template, some did not. This process did not establish incompetence and it is sad to see how readily political fodder is made out of it.
