The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has called on NHS commissioners and managers to follow a comprehensive set of maternity standards in their service and workforce planning.

A report published today by the RCOG, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Royal College of Midwives and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health pulls together 30 standards covering the different stages of motherhood drawn from existing documents by organisations including the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. The Healthcare Commission was consulted on the new standards.
