The Nursing and Midwifery Council will be able to restore its programme of professional conduct with a grant of£369,000 from the Department of Health. In December, the council had decided to reduce the number of professional conduct hearings to three per day for the rest of the financial year.Council president Jonathan Asbridge said the cash injection would allow them to 'maintain this key public protection responsibility'.The council has already absorbed an additional£3.5m, which it spent on call centre and professional conduct hearings last year, and made£2.5m of internal savings.

The council has also agreed to cut its nurses'welfare fund, and reduce the number of its call centre staff.
