Needlepoint: consultant radiologist Dr Mark Callaway (left) with patient Andrew Wood, demonstrating a new technique for detecting 'hidden' cancers, developed with his United Bristol Healthcare trust colleague Dr Julian Kabala. It uses an open magnetic resonance imaging scanner and a specially designed non-magnetic cutting needle to diagnose difficult to detect tumours. The two believe they are the only radiologists in the country to use this combined technology.

So far it has been used on only a handful of patients, but a tumour was found in each case.
