A new charity focusing on the health of adolescents is to be launched next week.

The Association for Young People's Health will bring together professionals and organisations across theUKthat work with teenagers in different sectors. The Department of Health and the Department for Children, Schools and Families are providing start-up funding.

Professor John Coleman, senior research fellow atOxfordUniversityand former director of the Trust for the Study of Adolescence, will chair the new organisation.

"Young people face specific health problems which we need to address. In theUKthere are high rates of teenage pregnancy, as well as significant levels of alcohol and substance misuse. Obesity and sexually transmitted infections are also a problem in this age group. Much is being done to combat these issues, but progress could be even better if we all worked together," said Professor Coleman.
